Message
Hello and welcome
to the 27th annual Winni Derby, and a big welcome to
Starcraft Marine who have come aboard with us this year. They
will provide their fine boats to highlight our major and grand
prizes. They will be joined by longtime sponsors Lowrance
Electronics and Mercury Motors. Also working with us will be
Ward’s Boat Shop in Ossipee, NH who will prepare the boats,
motors and trailers.
In addition, for
the first time this year you will be able to register online and
print out your ticket at the same time on your own computer.
This is a very quick and efficient way to register for the derby
and ensure that you have your ticket in hand. Go ahead and give
it a try - you will be glad you did!
For those who
fished with us last year you probably can recall the cold and
rainy weather we endured. We had a fisherman show up at the
weigh stations soaked through with water dripping off him
everywhere. When he stepped up to weigh his salmon someone asked
him if it was miserable out on the lake, and his remark was, “I
think it’s a beautiful day!”
The amount of fish
weighed in last year was in line with previous years, and the
quality remains high both in Landlocked Salmon and Lake Trout.
The biologists from Region II of the Fish & Game Department have
provided us with the netting results from last Fall, which can
be found in this paper, also explain the super condition of the
forage base or Rainbow Smelt. They will all be back with us at
the weigh station and are more than happy to answer any
questions you may have about the fisheries.
Last year we moved
the location of our award ceremonies to the Laconia Ice Arena on
Rt. 107 in Laconia. The move worked out really well for us as
there is plenty of room along with ample parking. We will be
there again this year for our 27th derby, and we urge
everyone to join us for the awards each day. We generally award
tackle prizes down 18-20 places in the Landlocked Salmon
Division, 10 in the Lake Trout Division, and 10 daily prizes in
the Junior Division. All prizes are awarded each day and if
you’re not present it goes to the next fish/angler in order. By
just showing up you may even win a “grab bag” which is one of
the Derby’s highlights.

annual Winni Derby, be sure to support our sponsors, obey the
rules and regulations of the Derby, NH Fish & Game Department
and the Department of Safety, Marine Division. Be sure to stop
by the Starcraft dealer nearest you and see the 2008 line of
aluminum and fiberglass boats. Also it’s important that your
boat is of adequate size, equipped with the proper safety
equipment and that you monitor the weather.
We’ll see you on
the Lake on May 16, 17 & 18, 2008 and let’s hope we have
wonderful weather and great fishing this year.
